— LekeeLekee, the social platform built for Nigeria and the global diaspora, today released Data Saver Mode: a single setting that cuts how much mobile data the app uses, and reports back how much each person has saved.

Data Saver Mode applies only on a cellular connection. Wi-Fi is never restricted.

What it does

  • Videos wait for you to tap play instead of starting on their own.
  • Video quality is limited to around 360p.
  • Background transfers are held back.
  • Photos are compressed before uploading, unless you choose “Always send original quality”.
  • Videos are sent at around 360p, unless you choose “Always send original quality”.
  • Settings shows your estimated saving, in the form “Saved ~X MB this week”.

The work behind it

Data Saver Mode is the most visible part of a longer programme that LekeeLekee publishes openly at www.lekeelekee.com/low-data, where every change is listed with the measurement behind it. Results measured to date include:

  • Pictures in the feed and in chats: 453 KB down to 77 KB on average, measured across 80 real posts, after converting every photo to a modern format at 1280 pixels.
  • Profile photos: 430 KB down to 27 KB. The existing archive was converted, not only new uploads.
  • Feed and chat responses compressed on every request. A typical conversation list falls from 570 KB to 118 KB in transit.
  • Video that starts small and steps up. Every video is stored at four sizes from 240p to 1080p; playback begins at the lightest and only steps up if the connection has room.
  • Nothing is downloaded twice. Pictures and profile photos stay on the device for a year, so scrolling back through a chat or a profile costs nothing the second time.

Data is one of the real costs of being online in Nigeria, and it is a cost we can actually do something about. We would rather cut what our app uses than ask people to use it less. Data Saver Mode puts that in our members’ hands, and the counter means nobody has to take our word for it.

Notes to editors

  • The savings figure in the app is an estimate based on autoplay, quality and upload savings, not metered usage. The app says so on the screen, and any coverage should describe it the same way.
  • “Saved ~5.4 MB this week” appears in the product screenshots. It is one account’s own week and is not offered as a typical result.
  • Measurement notes for every figure in this release are published at www.lekeelekee.com/low-data, last updated 19 September 2026.
  • This release makes no comparison with any other platform.
  • Product screenshots and a 20-second video, in landscape and 9:16, are available on request.
