ABUJA: Indigenes of Ebonyi state under the aegis of Association of Ebonyi Indigenes Socio-Cultural in the Diaspora AEISCID, has called on Governor Francis Nwifuru to redirect his attention to completing the numerous abandoned and unfinished projects littering Ebonyi State rather than expending energy on his re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group’s President, Ambassador Paschal Oluchukwu, in a statement on Thursday, said the governor’s preoccupation with a second term would prove more wasteful for the State given his failure to deliver visible infrastructure over three years in office.

“AEISCID implores the government to focus more energy on supervising the numerous projects it has embarked upon without completion to ensure its swift and speedy delivery rather than channel its energy to the politics of 2027 and the re-election of the governor for another term in office which could prove more wasteful,” the statement read.

The group’s position was hinged on a viral video showing the Senate’s Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, inspecting a two-span bridge linking Odomoke and Ekelibe communities in Ebonyi Local Government Area, during which he and an expatriate contractor flagged a failed section of the structure being built by the State’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Concession.

According to AEISCID, the bridge episode was only the latest evidence of a pattern that has defined the Nwifuru administration, from 2-kilometre roads in several communities that the government has since admitted were cancelled over poor execution, to the Vanco flyover tunnel that has remained uncompleted for close to three years.

“Ebonyi has become a huge construction joke under Gov. Nwifuru,” the group said, adding that most projects approved under the governor’s watch were single-bid awards to newly registered firms with no verifiable addresses.

The statement referenced a report alleging that a N6.2 billion contract for the construction of model classroom blocks across the State was awarded to a cronies, noting that the report remains unrefuted.

AEISCID said it aligned with Nwebonyi’s assessment of the bridge defects, despite not being professionals in engineering, dismissing an explanation by the State Commissioner for Infrastructure Concession, Engr. Abara, that the failed section was a temporary measure meant to receive overlay materials.

The group invoked Ebonyi State’s Fiscal Responsibility Act No. 3 of 2008, insisting it applies to any defaulting contractor, and warned that the House of Assembly should activate available legal instruments, including impeachment, should the governor be found to have breached the law.

“What is also responsible for the numerous poor concrete quality jobs adorning every part of the State, and why has the government not bothered to respond to citizens’ enquiries? Why has the oversight of projects not been taken seriously, and failed contractors being allowed to go scot-free without punishment or blacklisting by the State government?” the group queried.

AEISCID expressed disappointment that the administration’s response to accountability questions had been billboards bearing the slogan “4+4=8,” arguing this suggested the governor had already assumed a second term without an election.

“It is our firm position that Ebonyi cannot afford the wasteful expeditions currently ongoing in the State for another four years,” the group said.
