Scientists Have Made 80-Year-Old Cells Look Younger Than 20 in the Lab

What if scientists could turn old human cells into much younger ones?

Researchers at the University of Bonn in Germany have achieved something remarkable. They converted blood cell precursors from donors as old as 101 into neural stem cells with dramatically younger molecular age markers.

Even more fascinating, cells from an 80-year-old donor showed a molecular age of less than 20!

The process works by directly reprogramming blood cell precursors into neural stem cells. Over several weeks, the cells gradually lose many of their age-related molecular signatures, effectively resetting their epigenetic clocks.

These newly created stem cells can also develop into different types of brain cells, including neurons.

The discovery could help researchers understand how cellular aging works and develop better laboratory models for studying diseases such as Alzheimer's.
However, there is an important distinction: Scientists have rejuvenated cells in the laboratory, not reversed aging in human beings. This is not yet an anti-aging treatment.

Still, the discovery raises an exciting possibility: some biological signs of aging may be more reversible than scientists once thought.

Danny Angbashim: Man has been researching for years on ways to reverse or inhibit ageing. Many of the pioneers died without getting any close to their goal.
Will man ever get there? If attained what will be the ultimate objective?
To promote longevity or to perpetuate youthfulness i.e. mortality? Is it another Towe...
