Acclaimed Nigerian filmmaker Moses Inwang recently denounced the devastating impact of piracy and intellectual property theft in #Nollywood, describing it as a major threat to the industry's survival.
Inwang detailed the extensive financial and creative resources poured into post-production for his latest eight-part thriller, "Ordinary People", a project six years in the making. The filmmaker lamented that upon its release, the production was immediately uploaded illegally to unauthorized YouTube channels. He described the exhausting, ongoing battle of reporting and taking down these channels, only for new ones to pop up days later.
Inwang directly linked what he calls Nigeria's deep-rooted culture of piracy to the strategic shifts made by global streaming services in the region. He argued that the flight of capital and the scaling back of investments from platforms like Netflix happen largely because local audiences choose illegal content over paid, official streaming subscriptions.
