MY TAKE: HISTORY MUST NEVER BE ALLOWED TO BE REWRITTEN FOR POLITICAL CONVENIENCE.

Before anyone rushes to condemn Peter Obi or celebrate those attacking him, let us remind ourselves of some political history.

In 2011, Peter Obi was the sitting governor of Anambra State. During the Imo governorship election, he and the APGA leadership mobilised behind Rochas Okorocha under the party's Onye Aghana Nwanne Ya philosophy.

After his victory, Rochas Okorocha reportedly visited Governor Peter Obi at the Government House in Awka to express his gratitude.

According to Vanguard Newspaper of May 20, 2011, under the headline “APGA's Imo Victory and Obi's Political Sagacity”, Rochas thanked Peter Obi and APGA National Chairman, Victor Umeh, for their contributions to his victory.

He also commended Peter Obi for what he did towards his emergence as the new governor of Imo State.

So, the question is: What exactly has changed? Has history changed, or has political convenience become more important than loyalty, gratitude and principle?

Politics should be about ideas, character, competence and service to the people, not personal interests, political revenge or desperate attempts to destroy another man's reputation.

You may disagree with Peter Obi. You may challenge his ideas and question his decisions. That is democracy. But do not rewrite history simply because today's political interests demand it.

One bitter truth remains: A person who can easily betray yesterday's ally for today's political benefit should understand that tomorrow's allies may also question their loyalty.

As Marcus Aurelius is often quoted as saying:

"When a bunch of known corrupt people unite against one man and spare no effort to ridicule him, blackmail him and assassinate his character, follow that one man."

Let facts speak louder than political propaganda. Let history speak louder than personal interests.
