A man called off his wedding after his fiancée’s family told him he was “marrying down.”
I read this story shared by Kemi on X, and it raises an important question about money, respect, and marriage.
Here’s what happened.
A man and his fiancée were both earning less than ₦700,000, so they agreed to have a small, intimate wedding they could comfortably afford.
Four months before the wedding, his father called him and gave him ₦10 million.
The money, he explained, was something he had been saving for a long time. He had promised to give it to his son before his wedding.
The young man was grateful, but he already had a plan for the money: **he wanted to use it to start a business after the wedding.**
He told his fiancée about the gift and his plans.
A few days later, her family invited him to dinner.
During the meeting, they announced that they wanted to change the wedding venue and make a few other adjustments because her uncles and cousins would be travelling from abroad.
He asked a reasonable question: Were they willing to contribute financially to cover the additional costs?
They said no.
He explained that he couldn't afford the changes because his parents were already sponsoring most of the wedding expenses.
Then his fiancée's mother made a statement he would not forget.
“My daughter is already marrying down. At least don't disgrace us in front of our family members.”
He looked at his fiancée, expecting her to say something.
She remained silent.
That silence appears to have been the final straw.
He stood up and told her parents they should find someone better to marry their daughter because he was no longer interested in the wedding.
Since then, her family has called several times, hoping to resolve the matter.
But he says he has already informed his parents that the wedding is off, and his family has cancelled its plans.
Now, let's talk about this.
The issue here isn't simply whether he should have spent the ₦10 million on the wedding.
It is the expectation that he should abandon his financial plans to satisfy a family that wasn't willing to contribute to the additional expenses.
It's also the insult. If they genuinely believed he wasn't financially ready for the lifestyle they wanted for their daughter, that conversation could have happened respectfully.
But calling him someone their daughter was “marrying down” while expecting him to accommodate their demands is a different matter.
And then there's the fiancée's silence.
A wedding lasts a day. The financial consequences of starting a marriage with unnecessary expenses can last much longer.
My question is this:
Was he right to call off the wedding,
And if you were in his position, would you use the ₦10 million for the wedding or keep it for the business you planned to start?
