THE MESSAGE FROM A DEAD WOMAN
(PART 2)
Amara pressed both hands against her mouth, struggling to breathe quietly.
The woman's feet slowly turned towards the bed.
“She's here,” the woman whispered.
Her husband laughed nervously. “Stop it. You're beginning to scare me.”
“Then why is she holding her breath?”
Silence.
Suddenly, her husband knelt and reached beneath the bed.
“Amara!”
She screamed.
But before he could grab her, every light in the house went out.
A loud slap echoed through the room, followed by her husband's terrified cry.
“Who are you?” he shouted into the darkness.
A familiar female voice answered, “The woman you helped bury alive.”
Amara crawled out and ran towards the bedroom door. Lightning flashed through the window, briefly illuminating the room.
Her husband was on his knees, trembling.
Beside him stood a woman wearing the same white dress Amara had seen in her sister's burial photograph.
Her sister, Chiamaka.
But Chiamaka had died five years ago.
“Amara,” Chiamaka whispered, turning towards her. “There's something you need to know about Mama's death.”
Amara froze.
“What do you mean?”
Chiamaka pointed at her husband.
“He killed Mama because she discovered that he wasn't the man you thought he was.”
Amara turned towards her husband, tears streaming down her face.
He shook his head desperately.
“Don't believe her!”
Then Chiamaka smiled sadly.
“Ask him why he has the same birthmark as the man Mama spent twenty years searching for.”
Amara stared at her husband.
Slowly, he pulled his collar aside.
There, beneath his left ear, was a small crescent-shaped birthmark.
The same mark her mother had shown her in an old photograph of her long-lost son.
Amara staggered backwards.
Her husband whispered, “Please, let me explain.”
Her phone vibrated one last time.
A new message appeared from her mother's number.
“My daughter, the man you married is your biological brother.”
Amara screamed.
And from somewhere inside the house, a baby began to cry.
