ELEME LGA ISSUES URGENT SAFETY ADVISORY FOLLOWING REPORTED OIL SPILL IN ALETO
The attention of the Executive Chairman of Eleme Local Government Area, Chief Hon. Obarilomate Ollor DSSRS. JP, has been drawn to verified videos circulating on social media concerning reported oil spill along the Eleme Old Bori Road in Aleto, Eleme.
In response to the development, the Chairman has called on the relevant government agencies, regulatory authorities, and the operating company to take immediate action to shut down the affected pipeline, where necessary, and commence urgent containment measures to prevent further spread of the spill and minimise its potential impact on lives and the environment.
As efforts continue to bring the situation under control and ensure public safety, residents and members of the public are strongly advised to avoid the affected area and use alternative routes until it is declared safe. Residents living within or close to the affected pipeline right-of-way corridor are also advised to temporarily relocate to safer areas as a precaution against potential health and environmental hazards.
The Chairman assures the people of Eleme that a joint investigation will be conducted by the relevant authorities to establish the cause and extent of the spill and determine appropriate measures. He further assures the public that all necessary remedial actions will be pursued in accordance with applicable environmental regulations and recognised international best practices, while appropriate sanctions will be sought against any parties found culpable.
The Council urges residents to remain calm, prioritise their safety, comply with official advisories, and avoid actions that could expose them to further danger. Further updates will be communicated as more verified information becomes available.
