DAY 16 — DISCERNMENT IS A CHRISTIAN DUTY
As you start your day, ask God for spiritual discernment. The Bible does not command believers to accept everything labelled “Christian.” John tells us to test the spirits because many false prophets have gone into the world (1 John 4:1). Discernment requires prayer, biblical knowledge, wisdom, humility, and patience (Philippians 1:9–10; James 1:5). Do not judge a message merely by how emotional it makes you feel. Examine its doctrine and its fruit (Matthew 7:15–20). What does it teach about Christ? What does it teach about salvation? Does it honour Scripture? Does it produce holiness, love, humility, truth, and obedience? Or does it produce fear, greed, pride, manipulation, dependency, and confusion? Even impressive signs cannot replace biblical truth (Deuteronomy 13:1–4). Ask the Holy Spirit to help you distinguish truth from error. A mature Christian is not one who believes everything, nor one who doubts everything, but one who carefully tests everything and firmly holds on to what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21; Hebrews 5:14).
