BEFORE YOU SAY GOODBYE
EPISODE 11: HE CAME BACK
Maya had spent the morning telling herself she would not cry over Alexander again, but the note on her coffee table kept pulling her back to last night.
Don't come looking for me.
He had written it as if their kiss and the quiet hours they shared meant nothing. As if leaving while she slept was easier than looking her in the eyes and saying goodbye.
She was halfway through deleting his number when someone knocked.
Maya opened the door and found Alexander standing there in the same dark shirt from last night, his eyes tired and his face drawn.
“You've got to be joking,” she said.
“Maya, please let me explain.”
“Explain what? That you left while I was asleep? That you wrote me a note telling me not to look for you, like I'm some mistake you needed to escape?”
“I know how it looks.”
“No, you don't.” Her voice shook. “You don't know what it feels like to wake up beside someone you love and believe, even for one beautiful second, that he's finally chosen to stay, only to find an empty space and another goodbye.”
Alexander lowered his eyes. “You're right.”
“Don't agree with me as if it fixes anything.”
“It doesn't.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because I couldn't leave it like that.”
“You already did.”
“I know.”
Maya folded her arms, fighting the urge to shut the door and the equally humiliating urge to pull him inside. “You always know after you've hurt me. You knew five years ago. You knew when you came back asking for thirty days. You knew last night when you held me and kissed me. Yet every time things become real, you run.”
“I was afraid,” he said.
“Of what? Me?”
“Of how much I still need you.”
The words settled between them. A part of her wanted to believe him, and she hated that he still had that power.
“You don't get to call it love when it only appears in the moments before you disappear,” she whispered.
“I kept telling myself I could come close enough to feel you again without wanting everything back. But every time I'm with you, I remember the life we planned, and I start thinking maybe I could have it after all.”
“Then why did you leave this morning?”
“Because I woke up and saw you sleeping beside me. You looked peaceful. I thought if I stayed, I'd want to tell you everything, and the truth might put you in danger again. I panicked. I decided for you, then called it protection.”
Maya's anger shifted, but did not disappear. “You keep saying you want to protect me, but you never ask what I want. You decide what I can handle and what I should know. Do you understand how lonely that is?”
“I do now.”
“No, Alexander. You understand that you're lonely without me. That's not the same thing.”
He accepted her words. “I can't undo what I did or ask you to trust me just because I came back. But I don't want fear to keep deciding who I lose.”
“Then stop running.”
The words came quietly, but they changed something between them.
He stepped closer. “If I stay, there are things I still have to tell you. Things that may make you hate me. I can't promise the truth will be easy.”
“I'm not asking you to make it easy. I'm asking you to stop making decisions about my life without me. If you're frightened, tell me. But don't kiss me like I'm your whole world and leave me a note like I'm nothing.”
“You are not nothing.” His voice broke. “You have never been nothing to me.”
“Then prove it by staying long enough to be honest.”
He reached for her hand slowly, giving her time to refuse. Maya remembered how his fingers had held hers the night before. She wanted to make him earn every inch of closeness, yet she was tired of pretending her heart had not been waiting for him.
She let him take her hand.
“I love you, Maya,” he said. “I know those words aren't enough anymore, but they're still true.”
“I'm still angry with you.”
“I know.”
“I don't trust you yet. And if you disappear again, I won't wait for you.”
“I don't want you to wait. I want to give you a reason to believe I can stay.”
She searched his face for the familiar escape. The fear was still there, but beneath it was something she had not seen in years: the willingness to stand still while she asked him to face what he had done.
“Don't make me regret this,” she whispered.
“I won't leave without talking to you first.”
It was a small promise beside everything he had taken from her, but it was the first one he had made without deciding what she needed to hear.
Maya lifted her hand to his cheek. Alexander closed his eyes and leaned into her touch.
Then she kissed him.
For a heartbeat he stood still, afraid to believe she had chosen to close the distance. Then his arms came around her and he kissed her back, tenderly at first, then with all the longing he had tried to bury. Maya gripped his shirt, tears slipping down her cheeks as the kiss carried heartbreak and a hope she was not ready to name.
When they parted, his forehead rested against hers.
“I'm here,” he whispered.
“For now,”
