“A few weeks ago, I heard for the first time that some people use detergent to boil eggs they sell to the public, and I was shocked.
A couple of weeks ago, I was telling my neighbour that some of the people who sell boiled eggs in big plastic containers boil them around the stream area not far from the studio here.
I was concerned that they might be using dirty water to boil the eggs. However, she said they did not use dirty water but collected clean water from nearby houses.
She claimed that they added detergent to the eggs while boiling them so that the eggs would not crack easily, would cook faster and would be easier to peel when customers bought them.
I was shocked and did not want to believe the story, so I decided to do a little investigative journalism. A few days after she told me the story, I saw one of the egg sellers going to that area to boil his eggs.
I stopped him and started asking about his business and where he bought his eggs, just making conversation while looking at the container he was carrying. I saw detergent inside it.
However, that alone did not confirm that he was adding detergent to the eggs while boiling them. Two days ago, I asked someone to take me to the exact spot where they boil the eggs.
As we approached the place, I could smell detergent. It smelled as though they were washing clothes with detergent. I also noticed many empty detergent sachets scattered on the ground.
There was some detergent around the pot, and the eggs looked a little foamy, as though a small amount of detergent had been added. If you buy boiled eggs outside, you need to be very careful.
You might say I did not see them pouring detergent into the eggs, and that is true. I did not see them do that. However, look at the water they used to boil the eggs and how foamy it was.
It also smelled like detergent. I still boiled the egg and pretended as though nothing was happening. Indeed, it was much easier to peel. However, I did not eat it because I suspected it had been boiled with detergent.
I am sharing this information so that you can stay safe. Whenever you buy food, you need to be careful and ensure you have the information you need before making a purchase.
It is also possible that not all egg sellers do this, but how would we know?”
