Calm Adults Build Stable Children

Shouting is a weak form of leadership, at home and in school. Angry adults create fear. Calm adults create order. Whether you are in the classroom or in the living room, the children in your care will mirror your energy before they listen to your words.

Use proactive energy, not reactive energy. That means clear routines, clear expectations, and a fair system that deals with misbehaviour, so you do not have to drag a child or raise your voice.
Children will not remember your volume. They will remember whether they felt safe under your watch.

Tips for parents and teachers
1. Pause before you respond. Take a deep breath and count to ten. A calm reply protects the child's confidence and your own authority.
2. Lower your voice. A quiet, firm tone gets more attention than a loud one.
3. Set the rules before the problem. Children behave better when they know what is expected. Agree on routines for homework, bedtime, handwashing, lining up and tidying up, and keep them consistent.
4. Name the behaviour, not the child. Say "That choice is not acceptable," not "You are wicked" or "You are stubborn."
5. Look for what is behind it. Hunger, tiredness, fear, jealousy and trouble elsewhere often sit behind misbehaviour. Seek to understand before you correct.
6. Correct privately. Never shame a child in front of siblings, classmates or visitors.
7. Use fair, logical consequences. A loss of a privilege, a calm conversation or a time to reflect works better than a slap or a scolding.
8. Catch them being good. Praise good behaviour more often than you punish bad behaviour.
9. Step away if you must. If you are too angry to respond well, take a moment, hand over to another adult if possible, and return when you are calm.
10. Protect your own energy. Rest, pray, eat well and ask for help. A tired and overwhelmed adult is more likely to shout.

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger (Proverbs 15:1).

Calm adults raise confident children. Be the calm they can trust.

Have a fabulous weekend.
