CHAPTER 8: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Sometimes, the person who holds the key to your past is the same person everyone has been searching for.

Rita could not sleep that night. The mysterious message kept replaying in her mind.

"Amara is alive. If you want to find her, stop trusting your own family."

Who sent the message? And why had Amara disappeared twenty-nine years ago?

Early the next morning, Rita called Emeka.

"Please, I need your help finding someone," she told him.

"Who?"

"Amara. She was my father's friend, and I believe she knows what happened to him."

Emeka became quiet.

"Rita, I heard a rumour that a woman matching her description lives near the old market. People say she rarely speaks to anyone."

Rita's heart jumped.

"Can you take me there?"

"Yes, but we must be careful. Someone has been following you."

By 10 a.m., they had reached the old market, where women were arranging tomatoes, pepper, smoked fish, and baskets of garri.

An elderly woman selling vegetables watched Rita as she passed.

Suddenly, the woman dropped the bowl in her hands.

"Daniel's daughter?" she whispered.

Rita turned immediately.

"Ma, did you know my father?"

The woman looked around nervously.

"Follow me, but don't ask questions here."

She led Rita and Emeka through a narrow path behind the market to a small, weathered house.

Inside, an elderly woman sat beside a window, staring at an old photograph.

When she turned around, Rita recognised the face from the picture her mother had shown her.

"Amara?" Rita whispered.

The woman slowly stood up.

"Your father told me that one day you would come looking for the truth."

Tears filled Rita's eyes.

"Please, tell me what happened to him."

Amara held her hands.

"Your father discovered that some people were hiding dangerous activities near the old cassava mill. He wanted the authorities to investigate, but before he could expose everything, he disappeared."

"Who was responsible?"

Amara glanced nervously at the window.

"Chief Nwafor knows more than he has admitted. But there is something even more frightening."

Rita leaned closer.

"What is it?"

Amara's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Your father did not disappear alone. Someone from your mother's family helped him escape that night."

Rita stepped back in shock.

"My mother's family? Who?"

Before Amara could answer, a loud crash came from outside.

Emeka rushed to the window.

A black vehicle had stopped in front of the house. Two men stepped out and walked towards the door.

Amara's face turned pale.

"They have found me!"

She grabbed Rita's wrist and pushed a small envelope into her hand.

"Whatever happens, do not let Chief Nwafor see this letter."

The men began pounding on the door.

"Open up! We know you are inside!"

Amara looked directly into Rita's eyes.

"Your father may still be alive, my child. But if these men discover what is in that envelope, you may never find him."

Suddenly, the door burst open.

And the first person to enter was someone Rita never expected to see.
