A Nation Bleeding Its Healers: Why NMA and NARD Must Demand an Immediate State of Emergency in Nigeria's Health Sector
The numbers do not just tell a story; they sound a blaring alarm.

Between 2015 and 2026, Nigeria has suffered an unprecedented loss of nearly 20,000 medical doctors to the global diaspora. Behind these statistics compiled from Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) tracking are broken operating theaters, desolate emergency rooms, and overburdened colleagues stretching themselves to a breaking point.

When over 85% of resident doctors actively plan to or are processing their exit, and the doctor-to-patient ratio plummets past 1 to 4,000 citizens (a staggering collapse from the WHO recommendation of 1 to 600), we are no longer dealing with a routine labor dispute. We are witnessing the systematic asphyxiation of Nigeria's public healthcare system.

It is time for bold, uncompromising action. The NMA and NARD must formally demand that the President declare an immediate State of Emergency in Nigeria's Health Sector.

The Reality Behind the Numbers
The Exodus: The outflow of medical talent has accelerated exponentially, jumping from a baseline loss of 750 doctors in 2015 to a cumulative crisis point nearing 19,200 professionals.

The Deficit: Nigeria currently battles a staggering deficit of over 315,000 medical doctors to adequately cater to a surging population of more than 200 million people.

The Breaking Point: Remaining doctors face hazardous working conditions, prolonged and unregulated on-call shifts, non-competitive remuneration devoured by inflation, and decaying hospital infrastructure.

Why a State of Emergency is Non-Negotiable
Routine negotiations, endless committees, and piecemeal promises are no longer enough. Declaring a national state of emergency in healthcare is the only way to shock the system into immediate, targeted reform. It requires:

Emergency Retention & Remuneration Packages: Immediate, inflation-adjusted hazard and retention allowances disbursed directly to frontline practitioners to halt the daily mass resignations.

Infrastructure Overhaul: Fast-tracking capital allocation for the complete rehabilitation of tertiary teaching hospitals and secondary healthcare facilities.

Bureaucratic Streamlining: Eliminating administrative bottlenecks that frustrate young doctors, delay postings, and stall specialist training programs.

A Call to Action
Healthcare security is national security. A nation that trains its brilliant minds for export while its citizens die from preventable and treatable conditions is walking a tightrope over a precipice.

The leadership of the NMA and NARD carry the collective voice of the Nigerian medical community. The time for quiet diplomacy has passed. Demand the state of emergency now—before there are no doctors left to save us.
