AI SERIES #8: Use AI to Investigate Suspicious Messages ๐๐ค
You receive a job offer promising โฆ500,000 monthly.
All you have to do is pay โฆ5,000 for registration.
The message looks professional. They even send you a website.
Would you know how to investigate it before paying?
Here's one way AI can help.
STEP 1: Copy the suspicious message.
It could be a job offer, investment opportunity, giveaway, online seller, or a message from someone claiming to represent a company.
STEP 2: Open ChatGPT and use this prompt.
Copy and paste this:
"Act as a fraud-awareness assistant. Help me investigate this message.
Here is the message:
[PASTE THE MESSAGE HERE]
Please:
1. Identify any warning signs or suspicious claims.
2. Point out anything that seems unusual or needs verification.
3. List the specific facts I should verify independently.
4. Suggest ways to check whether the company, website, sender, or offer is legitimate.
5. Tell me what additional information you need before drawing a conclusion.
Separate what you can establish from what you are only suspecting. Do not declare it legitimate or fraudulent without sufficient evidence."
STEP 3: Don't stop at the AI's answer.
This is where many people make a mistake.
AI can help you identify warning signs, but it can also miss scams or flag legitimate offers incorrectly.
Take the next steps:
โ
Find the company's official website independently. Don't rely only on the link in the message.
โ
Check whether the offer appears on the company's official channels.
โ
Verify contact details through independently obtained sources.
โ
Never pay an unexpected fee or share an OTP, password, or banking PIN just because a message looks legitimate.
BONUS TIP: If the message contains a website link, ask AI to help you identify what to verify about the domain, company identity, and website history. A professional-looking website alone proves nothing.
Remember, the goal isn't to make AI decide whom you should trust. It's to use AI to ask better questions and investigate before taking action.
Try this the next time an offer looks too good to be true.
