Earlier, I talked about AI and the jobs it could affect. But I want Nigerian students to think about something closer to home.
Imagine spending 4 or 5 years in university studying for a career, only to graduate into a job market where AI can already handle some of the tasks you were trained to do.
Look at some of the courses we study here:
1. Mass Communication: AI can write basic news reports, generate scripts, summarize interviews and create content.
2. Accounting: AI can process invoices, categorize transactions, analyze spreadsheets and assist with financial reports.
3. Business Administration: AI can prepare reports, analyze business data, summarize meetings and handle routine administrative work.
4. Banking and Finance: AI can analyze financial data, detect unusual transactions and automate parts of customer service.
5. English and Literary Studies: AI can write, summarize, proofread and edit different types of text.
6. Law: AI can summarize legal documents, assist with legal research and prepare first drafts of certain documents.
7. Marketing: AI can generate adverts, write promotional content, analyze customer data and help businesses plan campaigns.
I'm not saying these courses will become useless. These professions involve much more than the tasks I've listed. But the routine parts of these jobs are changing, and I think students should pay attention.
If you're in university right now, please don't depend on your certificate alone.
Learn how AI works in your field. Get practical experience. Build projects. Learn to communicate, solve problems and check whether the information AI gives you is actually correct.
Don't wait until graduation before you start thinking about the skills employers will pay you for.
And I also believe our universities need to do more to prepare students for the world they're entering.
Because what is the point of spending years preparing for a career if you never prepare for how that career itself is changing?
I'm curious about this one: if you're in university or have already graduated, is your course preparing you for the jobs that exist today, or are you having to teach yourself most of the practical skills?

Only the wise will apply this wisdom…
It’s even more of a reality in developed countries .., really hope those who can, will latch on to this as seriously as they can
