CHAPTER 7: THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

Rita stared at the photograph she had found inside the package. The young woman standing beside her father looked strangely familiar, but she couldn't remember where she had seen her.

That night, she called her mother.

"Mummy, who is the woman in this photograph?"

Her mother went silent.

"Mummy, please talk to me!"

Finally, Mama Ronke whispered, "Her name is Amara. She was your father's closest friend in Umuoma."

"What happened to her?"

"She disappeared on the same night your father went missing."

Rita's heart raced. "Why didn't you tell me this before?"

"Because I was afraid, my daughter. Before she disappeared, Amara came to our house and told me your father had discovered something dangerous."

"What did he discover?"

Her mother began crying.

"She said Chief Nwafor was involved, but she never explained how."

Suddenly, Rita heard a loud knock at her door.

She ended the call and cautiously approached the entrance.

Nobody was there.

Instead, someone had slipped a folded note beneath the door.

Rita picked it up and opened it.

"Amara is alive. If you want to find her, stop trusting your own family."

Rita's hands trembled.

Who had sent the message?

Could Amara really be alive after twenty-nine years?

And if she was, why had she remained silent for so long?
