NIGERIA'S health minister has warned that antimicrobial resistance is a serious, often overlooked threat. It happens when bacteria and other microbes stop responding to medicines that once killed them or controlled their growth. Misusing antibiotics can contribute to this problem.

Think about this for a moment.
You have a fever. You buy antibiotics without seeing a doctor. You take them for two days, feel better, and keep the remaining tablets for next time.
It may seem harmless.

But when antibiotics are used inappropriately, the bacteria they are meant to fight can become resistant. Infections may then become harder to treat.
The frightening question is this: What happens when a medicine that used to save your life no longer works?

This is why antibiotics should only be used with appropriate medical guidance. Don't share them, use leftover antibiotics, or take them for viral illnesses such as the common cold.
