🗣️ Part 2: The Opportunity He Lost
“PLEASE, SIR! JUST GIVE ME FIVE MINUTES!”
David stood before the interviewer, exhausted, desperate, and fighting back tears.
But the man's next words would break his heart.
To understand how David ended up in this situation, remember the young man whose uncle sold his belongings to raise ₦400,000 for his dream job.
David had chosen a night bus instead of the flight his uncle paid for.
Now, he was paying the price for that decision.
On the highway, the bus had been attacked by armed robbers. The passengers were frightened, and David lost his money and phone.
As the bus journey was disrupted, he struggled to find a way to continue to Lagos.
His mind raced.
How will I contact my uncle? What if I miss the interview? How will I explain everything?
Meanwhile, Uncle Chinedu kept checking his phone.
“Why hasn't this boy called me? He should have arrived by now.”
He tried David's number repeatedly, but it wouldn't connect.
By the time David finally reached the company, the interview had already ended.
“I'm sorry, sir,” the receptionist told him. “The interview finished an hour ago.”
David's knees nearly gave way.
“Please, ma'am. We were robbed on the road. I lost everything. I travelled all this way for this opportunity. Please, let me speak to someone!”
The interviewer came out and listened to his explanation.
But his expression remained firm.
“We have already selected the candidates moving forward. You should have arrived on time.”
“Sir, please! My uncle sold his belongings to help me get here. I cannot go back home like this!”
The man shook his head.
“I'm sorry. There's nothing we can do.”
David walked away with tears in his eyes. The job he had waited years for was gone.
When he finally reunited with Emeka, his friend could hardly believe what he saw.
“I warned you, David! Why didn't you listen?”
David lowered his head.
“I thought I was being smart. I only wanted to save money.”
Then his phone rang.
It was his uncle calling from Emeka's phone.
“David! Where have you been? I've been worried sick!”
David's voice trembled.
“Uncle… I got robbed.”
“What? How?”
“On my way to Lagos.”
“Your flight?”
David went silent.
“David, answer me! Did you take the flight?”
“No, Uncle. I took a night bus because I wanted to save money.”
Silence.
Then his uncle spoke, his voice heavy with disappointment.
“David, I sold my belongings because I believed in you. I told you to take that flight. And now you've missed the interview?”
“I'm sorry, Uncle. Please forgive me.”
“I don't even know what to say to you right now.”
David broke down.
For years, he had prayed for an opportunity. When it finally came, he allowed the temptation to save money to cloud his judgment.
Now, he had to face the consequences.
But here's the question: Was David simply unlucky, or did he make a mistake he could have avoided?
