While people avoided Kambou Sie because they feared his illness was contagious, his father kept coming back.

The young man from Côte d’Ivoire, also known as Prosper, had developed a facial tumour that grew until it interfered with his vision and speech. His appearance drew cruel comments, and the isolation made an already difficult illness harder to bear.

His father continued searching for help.

Through a nun connected with the Liliane Foundation, the family reached people who could take their appeal further. The charity Una Voce per Padre Pio helped arrange care in Naples, Italy. 🩺

At the Pascale cancer institute, doctors identified the illness as Burkitt lymphoma. Treatment included chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a stem cell transplant, followed by reconstructive facial surgery.

As the tumour reduced, Prosper began thinking about life beyond treatment.

A later account from the organisation involved reported that he returned to Côte d’Ivoire in December 2017, after the lymphoma had been successfully treated.

His plans moved beyond simply returning to school. He entered vocational training and worked towards becoming an electrician. 📚

The young man who had been excluded from his community was studying for a qualification that could help him find work and build his future.

His father’s search had connected him with a network of people willing to help, across countries and languages. What followed required prolonged medical care and the chance to start again.

Who kept showing up for you when life became difficult?
