DANGOTE REFINERY IPO: OPPORTUNITY FOR THE POOR OR ANOTHER WAY TO ENRICH THE RICH?
Since the Dangote Refinery IPO was announced, Nigerians have been divided. Some believe it offers ordinary Nigerians an opportunity to become part-owners of one of Africa’s biggest industrial projects, while others fear that the wealthy will benefit more than the poor. But let us look beyond emotions and examine the facts. An IPO (Initial Public Offering) is when a company offers its shares to the public. The reported offer price is ₦525 per share, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares costing ₦5,250. The closing date has reportedly been extended from October 13 to October 27, 2026.
WHAT CAN ORDINARY NIGERIANS BENEFIT FROM, AND WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
Buying shares can give you part-ownership of the company, the potential to earn dividends if they are declared, and the opportunity to benefit if the share price rises. If the refinery grows profitably, shareholders may benefit over time. However, profits are not guaranteed, dividends are not automatic, and share prices can fall. A big company is not automatically a good investment; its financial position, valuation, debts, expansion plans, and future earnings matter. Wealthier investors may have an advantage because they can invest larger amounts and diversify more easily, but that alone does not prove the IPO is designed to exploit ordinary Nigerians.
Caution: Do not reject an investment simply because someone criticises it, and do not embrace it simply because everyone is talking about it. The real question is whether the potential returns justify the risks at the offer price. You can support Nigerian industrial development without investing in every opportunity, and owning shares in a famous company will not automatically make you rich. LET US DISCUSS: Do you think the Dangote Refinery IPO offers ordinary Nigerians a genuine opportunity to build wealth, or do you believe the risks deserve greater attention?
