Why court struck out charges against ‘fake’ agency DG Adeyemi

The Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out eight criminal charges against Adeniyi Adeyemi after prosecutors said the case contained defects and belonged before a different court.

Prosecution lawyer Rotimi Oyedepo told Justice Mohammed Umar that a review by the Attorney General found problems with the charges originally filed by the Inspector General of Police. He said the alleged document forgery fell within the jurisdiction of the Federal Capital Territory High Court.

Oyedepo therefore asked the court to withdraw the charges so proceedings could begin afresh at the appropriate court. Adeyemi’s lawyer did not object, and Justice Umar granted the request.

The decision was not an acquittal or a finding that the allegations were unfounded. Prosecutors said fresh charges had been filed at the FCT High Court and Adeyemi would be arraigned again.

Adeyemi claimed to head the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, which the Presidency says has no legal backing. He denies wrongdoing and maintains his appointment was genuine.

The controversy prompted lawmakers to investigate how the organisation obtained a ₦1.302 billion allocation in the 2026 budget. The Head of Service subsequently acknowledged inadequate checks before her office approved staffing arrangements and a recruitment waiver for the organisation.
