Day 3 of 25: "The Ordinary Heroes"

They were not superheroes in costume.
They were ordinary souls,
teachers and newlyweds,
sons and partners,
who wore duty like a second skin.

One was a co-pilot,
married just sixteen days
when the call came.
His bride now wears black
instead of white,
their honeymoon
turned into a funeral.

One was commissioned
just nine days before eternity
nine days to wear the rank,
a lifetime to earn it.
He earned it with his life.

One left behind a partner
whose grief echoes still:
"You didn't mention
you would not come back.
You left me."

One was an only son,
who boarded early
to care for his sister.
Wednesday was supposed to be
his homecoming.
Monday became his last day.

Twenty-five souls.
Twenty-five stories.
Twenty-five ordinary heroes.

They answered the call
not for applause,
not for medals,
but because the nation needed them.

They made their call.
Now we must make ours.

Attention! . At Ease! . Soldier.
Twenty-five heroes have gone home.
