Can you name your great-grandfather's mother? Not his father. His mother.

In most families a name lasts about three generations. Nobody decides to forget it. The people who knew were simply never asked, and memory does not outlive the person who holds it.

This weekend, sit with one elder and ask three questions. What was your mother's full name? Where was she from, and who were her people? What did the family call her at home?

Then write it down where the whole family can find it.
