Atiku Abubakar: A Life in Public Service and Politics

Atiku Abubakar, born on 25 November 1946 in Jada, present-day Adamawa State, is one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures and former Vice President.

He began his career in the Nigeria Customs Service in 1969 and spent about two decades in public service, rising to the position of Deputy Director before retiring in 1989. During this period, he also developed interests in business, particularly real estate, agriculture, logistics and later the oil and gas services sector.

Atiku entered national politics in the 1980s and became closely associated with the political movement led by Shehu Musa Yar’Adua. He served in Nigeria’s Constituent Assembly in 1989 and later became increasingly involved in the country’s democratic transition.

In 1998, he was elected Governor of Adamawa State but left the position after being selected as Olusegun Obasanjo’s running mate. The pair won the 1999 presidential election, and Atiku served as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007.

During his vice presidency, Atiku was involved in economic and institutional reforms and became an influential figure within the administration. His relationship with President Obasanjo later deteriorated, particularly over the controversial attempt to amend the Constitution to permit a third presidential term.

After leaving office, Atiku continued to pursue the presidency. He contested the 2007 election under the Action Congress, sought the PDP nomination in 2011, contested the APC primary in 2014, and returned to the PDP as its presidential candidate in 2019 and again in 2023.

In the 2023 presidential election, Atiku received 6,984,520 votes according to INEC's official results. He challenged the outcome in court, but the Supreme Court ultimately upheld Bola Ahmed Tinubu's victory.

Beyond politics, Atiku is known for founding the American University of Nigeria in Yola and for his involvement in various business and philanthropic activities.

His career has also been accompanied by controversies and corruption allegations, which he has consistently denied. Some allegations have been politically contested and should be distinguished from proven criminal convictions.

More than five decades after entering public life, Atiku Abubakar remains an important figure in Nigeria's political history, having served as a customs officer, businessman, governor, vice president and multiple-time presidential candidate.
