πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬ NIGERIA INDEPENDENCE DAY β€” WHAT EXACTLY ARE WE CELEBRATING?

Today, Nigeria is 66 years independent.

But honestly, I find it difficult to celebrate independence when millions of Nigerians are still struggling to afford food, insecurity continues to affect communities, young people struggle to find meaningful opportunities, and the cost of living remains painfully high.

The IMF reported that poverty had reached about 63% at the national poverty line, while 27 million Nigerians were estimated to have faced food insecurity in late 2025. (IMF)

So today, I don’t want to celebrate with empty slogans and beautiful pictures of the Nigerian flag.

I want us to reflect.

Independence was supposed to mean freedom, dignity, opportunity, security and a better future.

66 years later, we must honestly ask ourselves:

Are ordinary Nigerians truly experiencing the freedom our independence promised?

I love Nigeria. πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬
I believe in Nigerians.
And I still believe Nigeria can become the country we dream about.

But loving Nigeria also means having the courage to speak when things are not right.

Maybe October 1st should not only be a day of celebration. Maybe it should be a day of accountability, reflection and a renewed demand for a better Nigeria.

Happy Independence Day, Nigeria. πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬

May the Nigeria we celebrate someday become the Nigeria our people deserve today.
