Everyone in town knew Elias was obsessed with the dead.

But nobody knew how far it had gone.

Every Sunday, he visited the old cemetery with a single white rose. He would sit beside one particular grave for hours, talking to the woman buried beneath it.

Her name was Clara.

He had never met her when she was alive.

Yet Elias had convinced himself that she was his soulmate.

At home, he kept a photograph of Clara on his wall. He spoke to it every morning, telling her about his day. At night, he imagined their wedding—her walking down the aisle in a white dress, him waiting with tears in his eyes.

“I’ll never leave you,” he whispered.

Then, one stormy night, Elias disappeared.

Three days later, the cemetery caretaker found him sitting beside Clara’s grave.

He was wearing a black suit.

Two wedding rings rested in his palm.

And beside him was a second chair.

The strange part?

There were muddy footprints leading from Clara’s grave to the chair.

The caretaker followed them.

They stopped at the cemetery gate.

Only one set of footprints came back.

Elias was still sitting there, smiling at the empty chair.

When the caretaker asked him where Clara was, Elias slowly looked toward the grave.

“She finally said yes.”

The caretaker stared at the grave.

The soil was completely undisturbed.

Then Elias whispered:

“The wedding is tonight.”

At midnight, every light in the cemetery went out.

And from somewhere beneath the ground came the soft sound of a woman humming a wedding song.
