Signs and Symptoms of Rabies
Rabies is a serious viral infection that affects the brain and nervous system. After symptoms appear, it is almost always fatal.
Early symptoms:
Fever
Headache
General weakness and tiredness
Anxiety, restlessness, or irritability
Pain, tingling, itching, or burning at the site of the animal bite
Later symptoms:
Difficulty swallowing
Hydrophobia – fear or painful spasms when trying to drink water
Aerophobia – sensitivity to moving air or drafts
Excessive salivation or drooling
Confusion and agitation
Hallucinations
Muscle spasms and seizures
Paralysis, which may progress to coma
Difficulty breathing
Important: If someone has been bitten or scratched by a potentially rabid animal, do not wait for symptoms. Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water and seek urgent medical care for rabies post-exposure treatment.
