BEFORE I TYPE A SINGLE COMMAND, I REALIZE I'VE BEEN USING A GUI THIS WHOLE TIME. 🖥️👀

When I started learning about Linux, I came across something called the command line.

You type something…

The computer responds.

No icons to click.

No folders to open with a mouse.

Just commands.

And then I came across another term:

GUI — GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE.

That's actually the kind of computer interface most of us already use every day.

Think about your phone.

You see:

📱 Icons
📂 Folders
🔘 Buttons
📋 Menus
🪟 Windows
🖼️ Images

You don't have to type a command every time you want to open an app.

You simply tap the icon.

That's a GUI.

A GUI basically gives you a visual way to interact with a computer.

For example:

You want to open a file?

You can click it.

You want to delete something?

You can click the delete option.

You want to open an application?

You tap or click its icon.

The computer is still doing all the complicated work underneath…

but the GUI gives you a much easier way to communicate with it.

And suddenly I'm seeing something interesting:

COMMAND LINE:

You tell the computer what to do by typing commands.

GUI:

You tell the computer what to do by interacting with visual elements.

Both allow you to communicate with the computer.

They're just different ways of doing it.

And I've actually been using a GUI for years without knowing its proper name. 😂

Every time I tap an app on my phone…

Every time I drag a file…

Every time I click a button…

I'm interacting with a Graphical User Interface.

Now I'm beginning to understand why learning software development isn't only about writing code.

There's also the question of:

HOW DO HUMANS INTERACT WITH THE COMPUTER?

And that brings me to something I'm really curious about:

If a GUI lets me communicate with a computer using pictures, buttons and menus…

what happens when I remove all of those and communicate with the computer using ONLY text? 👀💻
