🩸 DAY 3 OF OUR RHESUS FACTOR JOURNEY
🧬 BLOOD GROUP VS RHESUS FACTOR — ARE THEY THE SAME THING?
Welcome back, Lekeelekee Family! ❤️
We have learned that the “+” or “–” in a blood type represents the person's Rhesus (Rh) status.
But here is today's big question:
👉 Is your blood group the same thing as your Rhesus factor?
🤔 THE ANSWER IS: NO!
They are two different characteristics that are commonly written together when describing someone's blood type.
🩸 Blood group refers mainly to the ABO system:
🔴 A
🔴 B
🔴 AB
🔴 O
🧬 Rhesus factor tells us whether the Rh(D) antigen is present or absent:
➕ Rh-positive
➖ Rh-negative
When we put the two together, we get familiar blood types such as:
❤️ A+ = Group A + Rh-positive
❤️ A– = Group A + Rh-negative
❤️ B+ = Group B + Rh-positive
❤️ O– = Group O + Rh-negative
❤️ AB+ = Group AB + Rh-positive
So, when someone says:
«“My blood group is O+.”»
They are actually giving us two pieces of information:
O = ABO blood group
+ = Rhesus status
💡 WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
Knowing both your ABO blood group and Rh status is important for healthcare professionals when assessing situations such as blood transfusion and pregnancy-related care.
And remember:
✨ Rh-positive is not “better” than Rh-negative.
✨ Rh-negative is not a disease.
✨ Your blood characteristics are largely inherited from your parents.
