MY LANDLORD IS A WITCH… I THINK
PART 2
I froze.
The voice came again.
“Madam… abeg open the door.”
I pulled my blanket over my head.
“Jesus…”
The person knocked again.
KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.
“Madam, why you dey ignore me?”
I wanted to scream, but my voice disappeared.
Who exactly was I supposed to call?
Police?
Pastor?
Or my village people?
I grabbed my phone and called my friend.
She picked up immediately.
“Hello?”
“Girl…”
“What happened?”
“There is someone inside my bathroom.”
Silence.
Then she asked:
“Are you sure?”
“Am I sure?! The person just knocked three times!”
She gasped.
“Don't open that door!”
“I wasn't planning to!”
Then the person inside the bathroom shouted:
“Madam! I can hear you talking!”
I almost threw my phone away.
My friend whispered,
“Run.”
“Run where? I'm on the second floor!”
“Jump through the window.”
“Are you paying my hospital bill?”
Before she could answer, the bathroom door handle suddenly moved.
CLICK.
I screamed.
“Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!”
Then I heard the voice again.
This time, it sounded irritated.
“Madam, abeg. I just want to use toilet.”
I was confused.
Why did the ghost sound like a normal Nigerian woman who had been waiting for NEPA to bring light?
I slowly walked toward the bathroom.
My legs were shaking.
I reached for the door.
Then I remembered Mama Bisi's warning.
DON'T ANSWER THE BATHROOM WHEN IT KNOCKS.
I stepped back.
Suddenly, my phone rang.
Mama Bisi.
2:24 a.m.
Who calls someone at that time?
I answered.
Before I could speak, she said:
“Don't open that bathroom.”
I swallowed.
“How did you know?”
She didn't answer.
Instead, she asked:
“Did she call you ‘madam’?”
My eyes widened.
“Yes.”
There was a long silence.
Then Mama Bisi whispered:
“Oh no…”
I asked,
“Ma, what is happening?”
She said:
“That means she has noticed you.”
“Who?”
Mama Bisi took a deep breath.
Then she said:
“The last tenant.”
The call ended.
I stood there staring at my phone.
The bathroom suddenly became quiet.
Too quiet.
I slowly turned around.
And that's when I noticed something that made my blood run cold.
There were wet footprints on my bedroom floor.
They started from the bathroom…
…and stopped directly beside my bed.
I looked down at my feet.
Then I heard a whisper behind me.
“Madam…”
I slowly turned.
Nobody was there.
But my bathroom door was now wide open.
And written on the mirror in wet fingerprints were four words:
“I LIVED HERE FIRST"
