Episode 15 — The Truth They Buried

Nobody moved after Amara's uncle said those words.
“Your father wasn't Richard's intended target.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Then who was?”
Her uncle looked at Amara's mother.
She closed her eyes.
“I think it's time you both knew everything.”
Amara sat beside Daniel.
Her mother took a deep breath.
“Years ago, your father discovered that Richard was secretly taking money from the family business.”
Daniel frowned.
“But my father knew?”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“Your father discovered it too. That's why the two of them started investigating.”
Sophia stepped forward.
“And my father?”
“He became involved later,” Amara's mother explained. “He helped move some of the money for Richard. But eventually, he regretted it.”
Sophia's eyes filled with tears.
“So that's why he died?”
“He was going to confess.”
Silence.
“He met Amara's father the night before his death,” her mother continued. “He gave him documents proving everything.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Then what happened?”
“Richard found out.”
Amara's mother reached for the old notebook.
“Your father planned to expose them. But before he could, Richard arranged an accident.”
Amara's heart pounded.
“My father was supposed to die?”
Her mother shook her head
“No.”
She looked at Daniel.
“Richard wasn't trying to kill your father.”
Daniel froze.
“He was trying to kill your father.”
Daniel's face changed.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Amara's uncle finally spoke.
“Your father had discovered where the missing money went. He also discovered that Richard wasn't working alone.”
Daniel stood.
“Who was helping him?”
Nobody answered.
Amara looked at her mother.
“Mummy…”
Her mother finally whispered,
“Someone from Daniel's family.”
Daniel's breathing became heavier.
“My family?”
“Yes"
She pulled another photograph from the old envelope.
It showed Daniel's father standing beside Richard…
…and another person
Daniel took the photograph.
His eyes widened.
“That can't be.”
Amara looked at him.
“Who is it?”
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“My mother.”
Amara's heart stopped.
The room fell silent.
And for the first time, Daniel wondered whether everything he had believed about his family was a lie.
