Extra Oil
The extra oil is the secret to surviving the delay. It is the inward spiritual readiness that only the Holy Spirit can produce. It includes intimacy with Christ, perseverance, Strong faith in God,obedience, holiness, and the fruit of the Spirit.
It emphasizes the fruit of the Holy Spirit — not merely the gifts.
It paints a picture of a mature Church: one that truly bears the character of Christ and is genuinely prepared for the coming Bridegroom.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, patience, and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23)
This fruit is distinct from the gifts of the Spirit, which can operate even in immature or carnal believers. Jesus said we can know people “by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16-20), while Paul contrasted the works of the flesh with the life produced by the Spirit (Galatians 5:19-21).
A Realistic Scenario
Imagine Brother John, a passionate believer in a vibrant Pentecostal church.
He has the Holy Ghost:
Saved several years ago and later filled with the Holy Spirit, John speaks in tongues fluently, prophesies, moves in words of knowledge, prays for the sick, and evangelizes boldly. The church sees him as “on fire” and “highly anointed.” He quotes Scripture powerfully and leads intense prayer meetings.
But he lacks the fruit:
In daily life, the transformation is missing. He is quick-tempered with his wife and children, often arguing or giving them the silent treatment. At work, he is sharp-tongued, critical, and occasionally dishonest. He harbors bitterness toward fellow believers, speaks negatively about them under the guise of “discernment,” and struggles with pride, lust, overeating, and impulsive spending.
Though loud with joy in church, he is moody and irritable at home. Those closest to him see very little of Christ’s character, while outsiders often view him as religious or hypocritical.
John genuinely loves God and believes he is Spirit-filled because of the supernatural manifestations in his life. Yet he is unprepared for the Bridegroom.
The Foolish Virgins
The five foolish virgins represent a church (or a believer) that has the gift of the Holy Ghost but lacks the extra oil — the transforming fruit of the Spirit.
Such a church or believer has lost its direction and guidance, along with leadership, vision, glory, wisdom, and revelation. Eventually, it becomes spiritually dim and dead.
Symptoms of the Foolish Virgins (The Church or Believer)
The five foolish virgins had lamps, but no extra oil. Here are clear symptoms of a church or believer who possesses the Holy Ghost but lacks the transforming fruit of the Spirit:
1. Lack of Surrender / Walking in the Spirit�They rely on emotional highs, spiritual gifts, or church activities rather than daily yielding their lives to the Holy Spirit (Romans 6:13; Galatians 5:16).
2. Carnality and Immaturity�Like the Corinthian church, they may operate in many gifts and have the Holy Spirit, yet remain carnal and immature — marked by division, strife, envy, and ongoing sin (1 Corinthians 3:1-3).
3. Neglect of Discipleship and the Word�Gifts can be received in a moment, but fruit takes time. It requires consistent time in the Word, pruning, obedience, and the renewing of the mind (John 15:1-8; Romans 12:2).
4. Quenching or Grieving the Holy Spirit�Through habitual sin, bitterness, unforgiveness, or disobedience, they hinder the Spirit’s transforming work — even while His presence and gifts may still operate (Ephesians 4:30; 1 Thessalonians 5:19).
The Bridegroom:
The Bridegroom is coming.
Not as a gentle teacher this time — but as the King of kings and the Judge of all the earth. He is returning for a prepared Bride, not a casual companion.
He is looking for more than activity, gifts, or loud worship. He is coming for a Church that shines with the oil of His own likeness — radiant with love, holiness, purity, and fruit.
He delights in the wise virgins. Their lamps are burning because their hearts are burning for Him. They know Him intimately, not just about Him.
When He appears at midnight, only those carrying extra oil will enter with Him into the marriage supper. The rest will be left outside — lamps flickering, hearts unprepared.
The difference between the wise and the foolish was not the lamp.
It was not the invitation.
It was not the church they attended.
It was not even their expectation of the Bridegroom.
The difference was the extra oil.
When midnight came, preparation became the only thing that mattered.
May our lamps still be burning when Jesus returns.

If you sense your lamp is running low — if you have gifts but lack fruit, if you are busy but not transformed — now is the time.
Come before the Lord and ask Him for fresh oil.
