EPISODE 2: 🍲 TOGO FOODS AND THEIR LOCAL NAMES

If you are serving in Togo, one of the first things you will discover is that food is more than food—it is part of the culture. 🇹🇬

As a missionary, learning the local foods and what people call them can help you understand and connect better with the people.

Here are some common foods you may encounter:

🍚 Rice — Mɔli / Rice (names can vary by language and community)

🌽 Maize/Corn — commonly known by local names such as Ablo when prepared in certain forms.

🥣 Akoumé — a popular maize-based staple, especially in southern Togo. It is often eaten with different soups and sauces.

🍌 Plantain — commonly eaten boiled, fried, or prepared in other local dishes.

🍠 Yam — widely eaten and prepared in different ways, including boiled, fried, or pounded.

🥜 Groundnuts/Peanuts — used in snacks, sauces and other local preparations.

🥬 Leafy vegetables and sauces — different communities have their own varieties and methods of preparation.

One interesting thing I am learning in the mission field is that the same food can have different names depending on the local language and community.

So, don't just ask, “What is this?”

Sometimes, ask:

👉🏽 “What do you call this in your language?”

That simple question can open a conversation and help you learn the culture.

As missionaries and visitors, we don't have to reject everything that is different from what we are used to. We learn, we ask questions, we respect the culture, and we remain grounded in our faith.

🇹🇬 Mission is not only about preaching to people; it is also about understanding people.
