Inspiring Mathematicians 91: Louis Nirenberg

Louis Nirenberg (1925–2020) was a Canadian-American mathematician widely regarded as one of the central figures in the development of modern partial differential equations (PDEs) and mathematical analysis.

Born in Hamilton, Canada, he made fundamental contributions to elliptic and parabolic PDEs, complex analysis, functional analysis, and differential geometry.

His work on regularity theory, including the celebrated Nirenberg inequalities, Nirenberg problem, and Nirenberg–Brezis–Nirenberg problem, provided powerful tools for understanding the existence, uniqueness, and smoothness of solutions to nonlinear equations.

Awarded the Abel Prize in 2015 jointly with John Nash, Nirenberg's ideas have profoundly influenced modern analysis, geometry, physics, and applied mathematics.
