Episode 14 — The Man at the Door

Everyone stared at the door.
Amara's mother whispered,
“Don't open it.”
But Amara was already walking toward it.
Daniel gently held her hand.
“We'll do this together.”
She opened the door.
Her uncle stood outside.
He looked tired.
“I know you've been asking questions,” he said.
Amara folded her arms.
“Then answer them.”
He looked at Daniel.
“Your father and mine were partners. Richard was stealing from the company, but he wasn't the only one.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Who else?”
Her uncle sighed.
“Sophia's father.”
Sophia stepped forward.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
He explained that Sophia's father had helped move some of the money, but later regretted it and decided to confess.
“That was why your father met with him,” he told Amara.
“And what happened?”
“He was threatened.”
Amara's eyes widened.
“By Richard?”
Her uncle shook his head.
“By someone more powerful.”
Daniel looked at him.
“My father?”
“No.”
He looked at Amara's mother.
“Your mother knows who.”
Everyone turned toward her.
Amara's mother finally broke down.
“I knew your father was going to expose them. I was terrified they'd come after you.”
She looked at Amara.
“So I helped him hide the evidence.”
Daniel took a deep breath.
“And the accident?”
Her uncle lowered his eyes.
“Your father survived it. He was trying to protect Clara because he had discovered she had seen something she wasn't supposed to see.”
Daniel froze.
“Clara…”
Suddenly everything connected.
The missing evidence.
The money.
The accident.
Clara's disappearance.
But there was one thing Amara still didn't understand.
“Who caused the accident?”
Her uncle looked at her.
“Richard.”
Daniel clenched his fists.
“But Richard already admitted to the accident years ago.”
“Yes.”
Her uncle nodded.
“But there's something he never told you.”
He pulled an old document from his pocket.
“Your father wasn't his intended target.”
Amara stared at the paper.
“Then who was?”
Her uncle looked at Daniel.
“Your father.”
Daniel went completely silent.
Then Amara reached for his hand.
“We'll get through this.”
Daniel looked at her.
For the first time that night, he smiled.
“Together.”
And this time, neither of them knew that the truth they had been chasing was finally about to set them free.
