A security guard found a hilarious way to win a tug-of-war with children: he threw candy at them.

One by one, the children stopped pulling the rope to grab the immediate reward.

It is funny, but the lesson is serious.

We do the same thing as adults.

A notification interrupts our work.
A short video steals 30 minutes.
A quick dopamine hit replaces a long-term goal.

The rope represents the goal.
The candy represents the distraction.

The children didn't suddenly become weaker. Their incentive changed.

And that's the danger of modern life: there is always someone—or something—throwing candy at the rope you're pulling.

Know your goal. And recognise the candy.
