Kogi Deploys New Incinerators to Improve Infection Prevention, Tackle Environmental Sanitation and Safe Disposal of Healthcare Waste
The Kogi State Government has stepped up its drive to strengthen healthcare waste management with the commissioning of newly installed medical waste incinerators across the state.
The facilities, installed by the Kogi State Ministry of Health in collaboration with Famkris Healthcare Initiative, were commissioned at the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, as part of ongoing efforts to improve infection prevention, environmental sanitation and safe disposal of healthcare waste.
Commissioning the facility on behalf of the Coordinating Commissioner for Health, Dr Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Mr Maji Enoch, commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery across the state.
Maji also applauded Famkris Healthcare Initiative for supporting the state with the installation of the incinerators, describing proper healthcare waste disposal as critical to protecting both healthcare workers and members of the public from avoidable health hazards.
He urged health facilities across the state to make full use of the incinerators provided at their locations, warning against indiscriminate disposal of medical waste.
According to him, improperly discarded healthcare waste could expose communities to infections and other environmental and public health risks.
The Permanent Secretary further stressed the need for regular maintenance of the facilities, noting that proper maintenance would enhance their efficiency, prolong their lifespan and ensure sustained benefits to the healthcare system.
Responding on behalf of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, the Chief Medical Director, Dr Oluwaseyi Folagbade, expressed appreciation to the state government for providing the facility with an incinerator.
Folagbade assured the government that the hospital would put the equipment to effective use and ensure its proper maintenance.
Earlier, the Team Lead of Famkris Healthcare Initiative, Dr Salamatu Yahaya, commended the Kogi State Government for creating an enabling environment for the organisation to implement various health interventions across the state.
She disclosed that the support was being implemented under the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Lives and Livelihoods Fund (LLF) Malaria Project, aimed at contributing to improved health outcomes in the state.
The commissioning marks another step in the state’s efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure while promoting safer and more environmentally responsible management of medical waste.
