The phrases we got completely wrong
“Curiosity killed the cat.”

We use it to shut people down.

The original was longer:

Curiosity killed the cat… but satisfaction brought it back.

It wasn’t a warning. It was permission to explore.
“Blood is thicker than water.”

We use it to put family above everything.

The original said the opposite:

The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.

Chosen bonds over blood ties.
“Money is the root of all evil.”

We blame the cash.

The original was clearer:

The love of money is the root of all evil.

Greed. Not the tool.
“Jack of all trades.”

We use it as an insult.

The full version was a compliment:

Jack of all trades, master of none… but oftentimes better than a master of one.
Time didn’t just shorten the sayings.

It flipped their meaning.
