The story is one of the strangest murder cases of the early 20th century and inspired the crime novel The Passionate Quest as well as later films and documentaries.

It centered on a wealthy Memphis socialite named Walburga “Dolly” Oesterreich and her secret lover, Otto Sanhuber.

Around 1913, Dolly began an affair with Sanhuber, a young textile worker. To keep the relationship hidden, she secretly moved him into the attic space above her home.

He spent years living there in near-total secrecy while her husband, Fred Oesterreich, remained unaware.

Sanhuber occupied the attic for nearly a decade.

He passed the time reading books, writing, and waiting for opportunities to come down when the house was empty or Fred was away.

In August 1922, neighbors heard gunshots from the Oesterreich home.

Investigators discovered that during an argument between Dolly and her husband, Sanhuber emerged from the attic and shot Fred dead.

What made the case famous was what happened afterward. Instead of fleeing, Sanhuber returned to the attic and remained hidden while police investigated the crime.

For years, authorities struggled to untangle the bizarre relationship between the widow and the man who had secretly lived above her ceiling.
