Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, speaking at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2026, formally accused France of leading a coordinated campaign to destabilize the central Sahel region, with the active complicity of Ukraine.

He described the insecurity affecting Nigeria, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso not as conventional terrorism or religious extremism, but as a deliberate strategy of recolonization driven by interest in the region’s natural resources, including uranium, gold, lithium, gas, and oil.

Zeine stated that armed groups positioned near Niger’s northeastern border were being used as proxies to threaten military installations and oil facilities.

The address reaffirmed the irreversible nature of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), underscored the three countries’ determination to defend their sovereignty and control over their resources, and called for structural reform of international institutions to give Africa greater representation, including a permanent seat on the UN Security Council...as of now #WeMove on #LekeeLekee
