MY LANDLORD IS A WITCH… I THINK

PART 1

When I saw the rent, I knew something was wrong.
₦350,000 for a self-contained apartment in Lagos?
Lagos?!
I stared at the agent.
“Are you sure this is not the price for one month?”
He looked at me.
“Madam, yearly.”
I almost hugged him.
In Lagos, finding an affordable apartment was harder than finding a man who would say, “Take this money, don't worry about paying me back.”
I paid immediately.
Big mistake.
The landlord was an elderly woman called Mama Bisi.
The first time I met her, she looked at me from head to toe and said,
“You're the new tenant?”
“Yes, ma.”
She handed me the keys.
Then she leaned closer.
“Three rules.”
I smiled.
“No problem, ma.”
“Rule number one: Don't cook after 10 p.m.”
“Okay.”
“Rule number two: Don't whistle inside the house.”
I paused.
“Okay…”
She stared directly into my eyes.
“And rule number three…”
She lowered her voice.
“If your bathroom knocks, don't answer.”
I laughed.
I thought she was joking.
She wasn't.
That night, I unpacked my bags, ate noodles and called my friend.
“Girl, this place is perfect! Cheap rent, nice room, no landlord wahala.”
My friend went quiet.
“Wait. You said the landlord is who?”
“Mama Bisi.”
Silence.
Then she said,
“Send me your location.”
“Why?”
“Just send it.”
I laughed.
“Are you coming to visit me?”
She replied:
“I'm coming to sleep in your house tonight.”
Before I could ask why, the call ended.
I shook my head.
“Everybody is mad.”
I went to bed around 11:30 p.m.
At exactly 2:17 a.m.
I heard it.
KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.
I opened my eyes.
The sound came from the bathroom.
I sat up slowly.
KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.
I remembered Mama Bisi's warning.
Then a voice came from inside.
A woman's voice.
“Madam…”
My heart started beating fast.
“Madam, abeg…”
I grabbed my phone.
The voice continued:
“Open the door. I wan use toilet.”
I nearly fainted.
Because there was only one problem.
I was the only person living in that apartment.
