“Please… can you lend me some money? I need to pay my rent before the weekend.”

Sophia stood before a group of wealthy women, desperately trying to hold back her tears.

Her mother was sick.

Her rent was overdue.

And she had already borrowed money from everyone she knew.

Instead of helping, the women laughed.

“Maybe you should go back to the village where you belong.”

Their laughter echoed through the hotel hallway.

Sophia lowered her head.

She had worked every day, but no matter how hard she tried, the bills kept coming.

Just as she turned to walk away, a man's voice stopped her.

“Wait.”

Sophia turned.

Standing behind her was Francis Alfred the son of one of the country's richest businessmen.

He had heard everything.

“Why were you crying?” he asked.

Sophia tried to hide her tears.

“It's nothing, sir.”

“How much do you owe?”

She hesitated.

“Sir, please forget about it.”
“How much?”

She finally told him.

Francis was silent for a moment.

Then he said something that left her completely speechless.

“I'll pay it.”

Sophia stared at him.

“I'll pay your rent. I'll take care of your mother's medical bills. I'll make sure you have enough to start again.”

“Why would you do that for me?”

Francis looked directly into her eyes.

“Because I need something from you.”

Sophia's heart began racing.

“What?”

He took a breath.

“Marry me.”

Sophia froze.

“You don't even know me!”

“I know.”

“Then why would you ask me to marry you?”

Francis finally revealed the truth.

His wealthy father had given him three months.

If Francis didn't marry, he would lose his inheritance to his already married brother.

“I need a wife,” Francis said. “You need help.”

Then he made the offer.

“Marry me for one year. I'll take care of your mother, your rent, and everything you owe. After one year, we're free.”

Sophia couldn't believe what she was hearing.

It sounded like a dream.
Or a trap.

She looked down at her trembling hands.
Then she remembered her mother lying sick at home.

She remembered the landlord's warning.
She remembered the laughter.

Finally, she looked up.
“Okay.”
Francis nodded.

Neither of them knew that this one decision was about to change both their lives.

Because Francis thought he was buying himself a temporary wife.

But he had no idea he was about to fall in love with the one woman who wanted nothing from his money.
