Episode 8 — The Box

The next morning, Amara stared at the old key sitting on Daniel's table.
“So we're really doing this?”
Daniel nodded.
“We need answers.”
Clara looked nervous.
“Maybe we should leave it alone.”
Amara looked at her.
“After everything we've been through, I'm not running from another secret.
Daniel smiled.
“That's my girl.”
She rolled her eyes.
“Don't start.”
He pulled her closer and kissed her cheek.
“I had to.”
They arrived at the storage facility that afternoon.
The old key opened a small metal box.
Amara held her breath as Daniel lifted the lid.
Inside was an old envelope, a photograph, and a handwritten note.
Amara picked up the photograph.
Her father was standing beside Daniel's father.
But there was another person in the picture.
Sophia.
Amara looked at Daniel.
“Why is Sophia in this?”
Daniel frowned.
“I don't know.”
Sophia stepped closer.
“My father knew yours.”
Everyone went silent.
Sophia picked up the note.
Her face changed as she read it.
“What does it say?” Amara asked.
Sophia handed it to her.
Amara read:
“The truth about what happened to Clara was never buried with me. Someone close to us knows the truth.”
Daniel looked at Clara.
Clara shook her head.
“I don't know anything.”
Suddenly, Amara's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
A man's voice spoke.
“You should have left the box alone.”
Amara's heart raced.
“Who are you?”
“You'll find out soon enough.”
The call ended.
Daniel immediately took the phone from her.
“Did you recognize the voice?”
“No.”
He looked worried.
Then Sophia suddenly said,
“I think I know who it is.”
Everyone turned toward her.
“Who?”
Sophia swallowed.
“My father.”
Daniel stared at her.
“But your father died five years ago.”
“I know.”
She looked at the phone.
“That's why I'm scared.”
That evening, Amara and Daniel sat together on the balcony.
For a while, neither spoke.
Daniel took her hand.
“Are you scared?”
“A little.”
“I'm sorry.”
“For what?”
“For bringing all this into your life.”
Amara leaned against his shoulder.
“You didn't.”
“I did.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“You gave me something I thought I'd never have.”
“What?”
She smiled.
“You.”
Daniel smiled and kissed her.
For a few peaceful seconds, they forgot everything else.
Then Amara's phone buzzed.
A new message.
She opened it.
Her smile disappeared.
“Ask Sophia why her father really died.”
Amara slowly looked at Daniel.
The past wasn't finished with them.
Not even close.
