Episode 7 — What Daniel Did
Amara barely slept.
The photograph of Daniel and Sophia kept replaying in her mind.
The message was simple:
Ask Daniel what he did.
The next morning, Daniel noticed immediately that something was wrong.
“You're quiet.”
“I'm fine.”
He looked at her.
“You're lying.”
Amara took out her phone and showed him the photograph.
Daniel's expression changed.
“Where did you get this?”
“Someone sent it to me.”
He sat down.
“That picture was taken after Sophia and I broke up.”
Amara frowned.
“Then why were you together?”
“Because I was helping her.”
“Helping her with what?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Sophia's father was in serious financial trouble. He had borrowed money from the wrong people. I helped him settle the debt.”
Amara stared at him.
“And you never told me?”
“I didn't think it mattered.”
“It matters when someone sends me a picture and makes it look like you were secretly seeing your ex.”
Daniel sighed.
“I understand.”
He reached for her hand.
“Amara, I have never cheated on you.”
She looked into his eyes.
“I believe you.”
“Then trust me.”
She nodded.
“I do.”
Daniel pulled her closer.
“I don't want anything from my past coming between us.”
Amara smiled.
“Then stop keeping things from me.”
“I will.”
He kissed her forehead.
Then her cheek.
Amara smiled.
“You're trying to distract me.”
“Is it working?”
“A little.”
He kissed her again.
This time, she kissed him back.
Later that afternoon, Sophia arrived unexpectedly.
Amara opened the door.
Sophia looked nervous.
“I need to tell you something.”
Amara stepped aside.
“What?”
Sophia took a deep breath.
“The person sending you those messages isn't trying to hurt Daniel.”
“Then who are they trying to hurt?”
Sophia looked at her.
“You.”
Amara's smile disappeared.
“Why?”
“Because someone wants you to find something your father hid before he died.”
Daniel walked into the room.
“What are you talking about?”
Sophia looked at him.
“Your father left behind another secret.”
Daniel froze.
“What secret?”
Sophia reached into her bag and pulled out an old key.
“This belonged to him.”
She placed it on the table.
“There's a storage box registered in Amara's father's name.”
Amara stared at the key.
Daniel picked it up.
“What is inside?”
Sophia shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Then her phone buzzed.
She looked at the message.
Her face went pale.
“What happened?” Amara asked.
Sophia slowly turned the phone toward them.
The message said:
“If they open that box, everything changes.”
Daniel looked at Amara.
Amara looked at the key.
Whatever was inside that box had been hidden for years.
And now…
Someone was desperate to make sure they never opened it.
