"I DON’T BELIEVE IN GOD OR THE HOLY SPIRIT” — 17-YEAR-OLD NIGERIAN GIRL’S COMMENTS SPARK DEBATE ABOUT FAITH

A 17-year-old Nigerian girl has triggered a wave of discussion online after openly questioning Christianity, the Bible, miracles and the existence of God during an interview with social-media personality Egungun of Lagos.

The teenager said she does not believe in God as Christianity describes Him, although she does believe that a creator exists.

Her questions went straight to some of the most difficult issues Christians have wrestled with for centuries:

If God is all-powerful and loving, why does He permit suffering? Why are sick children not always healed? Why did Jesus have to die instead of God simply destroying Satan? And how can we know whether reported miracles are genuine?

When asked about the Holy Spirit, she said she doesn't believe in Him and alleged that some miracles performed in Nigerian churches are staged. She also expressed the view that churches across Africa function as businesses. These are her claims and opinions, not established facts about churches or Christian miracles generally.

She also contrasted religion with science, describing science as based on facts while viewing religion as largely dependent upon faith and belief.

Her comments have understandably produced strong reactions.

But perhaps Christians should hear something else beneath them:

QUESTIONS.

Questions about suffering.
Questions about hypocrisy.
Questions about unanswered prayer.
Questions about whether Christianity is actually true.

And those questions shouldn't frighten Christians.

The Bible itself contains people crying out to God with difficult questions. Christianity doesn't ask believers to pretend suffering doesn't exist. At its center is Jesus Christ crucified—God entering human suffering—and the Christian hope of resurrection and ultimate restoration.

“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer…” — 1 Peter 3:15

Instead of attacking a 17-year-old for expressing doubts, this can become an opportunity for Christians to ask:

Do we know why we believe what we believe—and can we explain it with truth, patience and love?

🔥 Faith should not be afraid of sincere questions. Sometimes a question is where someone's search for truth begins.
