I’ve been thinking about something and I honestly need people’s advice. 🤔
I’m not someone who likes keeping plenty friends, so the few people I call friends are people I’ve known for a very long time. Some of these ones have been in my life since secondary school, and we even went through higher institution together. So naturally, I’ve always felt comfortable opening up to them about things happening in my life.
But lately, I’ve started noticing something.
When I was preparing for my marriage, one of them would always ask me, “How far now? How is everything going?” And I would tell her everything because I considered her a close friend.
Whenever I asked about her own relationship or marriage plans, she would say, “Nothing o, nothing dey happen.”
Only for me to later discover that we were getting married in the SAME MONTH! 😂 My own wedding was just one week before hers.
I didn't make an issue out of it. I just let it go.
Then I got pregnant and, because they are people I've known for years, I shared the news with them.
When it was their turn, one of them only told me after she had given birth. Another one didn't tell me at all until days after she gave birth, and that was after I had reached out.
Honestly, it made me start thinking.
I understand that everyone has a right to privacy. Nobody owes me every detail about their life.
But when you've known someone for years, you share your own life with them freely, and they constantly ask about yours while keeping major things about theirs away from you… how are you supposed to handle that friendship?
Should I continue the friendship but simply stop opening up so much?
Should I match their level of privacy and keep my own matters to myself?
Or is this the kind of friendship where, despite all the years you've known each other, you should just accept that you're no longer as close as you thought?
I don't like throwing people away, especially people I've known since secondary school and higher institution. But I also don't want to keep forcing closeness where it isn't mutual.
What would you do if you were in my shoes? 👇🏾
