You never know when a small favor will become a memory someone carries for years.

One day, a female coworker of mine came to work looking miserable.

I asked her what was wrong, and she told me it was her wedding anniversary.

She was almost certain her husband had forgotten.

This was before cell phones were a normal part of everyday life, and I happened to know her home phone number. Her kids were home for the summer, so I called.

One of her daughters answered.

I explained who I was and said, “You need to call your dad at work and remind him that today is Mom and Dad’s anniversary. But don't tell your mom or dad that I called.”

She agreed.

The next morning, my coworker walked into work with the biggest smile on her face.

Her husband had brought her flowers and taken her out to dinner.

Mission accomplished.

I never told her what I'd done, and we never talked about it again.

Six years later, she left the company.

At her farewell lunch, she gave me a hug and quietly whispered:
“My kids ratted you out. Thank you.”

I just smiled.

Honestly, I was glad they did.

Because sometimes, you don't need recognition for doing something kind.

Sometimes, it's enough to know that you helped turn someone's disappointing day into a beautiful memory.

And maybe that's one of the nicest things about kindness:
You don't always get to see how far a small act travels.
