The Church of the ten virgins.[Mathew 25 : 1 - 13] Your Extra Oil Matters!

We are all familiar with the story of this scripture, but today our focus is not on the story — it is on the revelation. Stories can bring excitement, but revelation brings light.
Stories can delight the ears, but revelation enlightens the soul.

When reading through the story, you will come across key words like: virgins, lamp, bridegroom, Delay,
Extra Oil, The Foolish Virgins, The Midnight and why the Wise Virgins could not lend their Oil .

Notice that Jesus opens this parable by saying, “The kingdom of heaven shall be likened unto ten virgins…” The word “virgins” (Greek: parthenoi) refers literally to young, unmarried women. This imagery beautifully represents the Church — the believers and followers of Christ. At this stage, we are called but not yet chosen, betrothed but not yet married, prepared but not yet approved. We are invited but not yet confirmed, purchased but not yet possessed, redeemed but not yet glorified, sanctified but not yet perfected, and enlisted but not yet crowned.
THE LAMP:
The lamp symbolizes direction and guidance. God’s Word is a lamp (Psalm 119:105), and the Holy Spirit’s ministry functions as a lamp to lead us (Acts 8:29, Romans 8:14, John 16:13).
Oil and lamp are inseparable. The oil’s role is to keep the lamp burning. Likewise, the Holy Spirit is the oil that powers the lamp. Without the oil, the lamp becomes useless — its light dies.
The lamps on the seven-branched lampstand in the Tabernacle were to be kept burning constantly — a powerful symbol of God’s perfection, holiness, and constant guidance.
In 2 Chronicles 21:7, the Scripture records:

“But the Lord was not willing to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant He had made with David, and because He had promised to give him and his descendants a shining lamp forever.”

Can you imagine a lamp without extra oil? Of what use is a lamp if it cannot stay lit or shine consistently?
DELAY
The true character of the Church is revealed in the place of delay. Wisdom or the lack of it is tested and exposed when delay comes.
In the parable, the bridegroom delayed, and the ten virgins — representing the Church, the followers of Christ, the redeemed, the sanctified, and the betrothed — were divided into two groups. The ultimate parameter for judgment was not their virginity, but their response to the unexpected delay.
We see this pattern throughout Scripture:
• In Exodus 32:1, when Moses delayed on the mountain, the people of Israel quickly turned to idol worship — revealing the idolatry that already resided in their hearts.
• In 1 Samuel 15, the delay of Samuel exposed the rebellious spirit in King Saul’s heart.
• In Genesis 16:1-15, the delay in the promise of Isaac led Abraham and Sarah to produce Ishmael — a decision whose consequences are still felt today in the unrest of the Middle East.
However, we also see Hannah, who handled her long delay with wisdom and faith, and was ultimately rewarded by God.

Midnight
Midnight represents the darkest and most unexpected hour.

Throughout Scripture, God often moves at midnight.

* Israel left Egypt at midnight.
* Samson carried away the gates of Gaza at midnight.
* Paul and Silas praised God at midnight.
* The cry announcing the Bridegroom came at midnight.

Spiritually, midnight symbolizes seasons of darkness, uncertainty, persecution, waiting, and the moment when human strength has reached its limit. It is precisely in those moments that genuine preparation is revealed.

Many believers can shine at noon when life is easy, but only those carrying extra oil continue shining at midnight.
