It is sad and disheartening to hear a state Governor make a comparison between fuel prices in the UK and Nigeria without putting the broader economic realities of both countries into context.
A Governor as the chief executive of a state is expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of economic realities, public finance and the factors that affect the cost of living. Comparing a single economic indicator without considering differences in wages, taxation, transportation costs, purchasing power, exchange rates and other economic variables can create a misleading picture.
Nigerians are already dealing with significant economic pressure, and statements from public officials should help citizens understand these realities rather than create further confusion.
This is also why political leaders and government spokespersons need to be more deliberate and factual in their public communication. Comments that appear careless or inadequately contextualised can undermine public confidence.
Our leaders should encourage all government officials and prominent party voices to communicate responsibly, focus on facts, and allow their policies and performance to speak for them as the 2027 elections approach.
